Weconsideranewsvendorproblemwithprice-dependentdemand,ineitheradditiveormultiplicativeformat.Thenewsvendorhastwomodesofpurchasing:regularorderingatthebeginningofthesellingseasonandemergencyordering(iftherealizeddemandexceedstheinitialorderquantity)attheendofthesellingseason.Bystochasticcomparisons,wesystematicallyinvestigatetheeffectsofdemandmagnitudeanddemandrandomnessonpricingandorderingquantitydecisionsaswellasexpectedprofitofthenewsvendor,underbothusualstochasticorder(firstorderstochasticdominance)andconvexorder(lessvariable).Ourkeyfindingsinclude:(i)incontrarytothecasewherepriceisexogenous,astochasticallylargerdemandshockmayevenleadtoalowerorderquantity;(ii)astochasticallylargerdemandshockleadstoahigherpricefortheadditivedemandcase,butmayleadtoalowerpriceforthemultiplicativedemandcase;(iii)astochasticallylargerdemandshockleadstoahigherexpectedprofitforbothdemandmodels;(iv)ingeneral,alessvariabledemandleadstoahigherexpectedprofitforbothdemandmodels;andfurthermore,alessvariabledemandshockhasnoeffectonpricefortheadditivedemandmodel,butleadstoahigherpriceforthemultiplicativedemandmodel.Theimplicationsofallthesefindingsforpricingandorderquantityarediscussedindetail.
