摘要 Theintroductionofnext-generationsequencing(NGS)technologyintestingforhereditarycancersusceptibilityallowstestingofmultiplecancersusceptibilitygenessimultaneously.Whiletherearemanypotentialbenefitstoutilizingthistechnologyinthehereditarycancerclinic,includingefficiencyoftimeandcost,therearealsoimportantlimitationsthatmustbeconsidered.Thebestpanelforthegivenclinicalsituationshouldbeselectedtominimizethenumberofvariantsofunknownsignificance.Theinclusioninpanelsoflowpenetranceornewlyidentifiedgeneswithoutspecificactionabilitycanbeproblematicforinterpretation.Geneticcounselorsareanessentialpartofthehereditarycancerriskassessmentteam,helpingthemedicalteamselectthemostappropriatetestandinterprettheoftencomplexresults.Geneticcounselorsobtainanextendedfamilyhistory,counselpatientsontheavailabletestsandthepotentialimplicationsofresultsforthemselvesandtheirfamilymembers(pre-testcounseling),explaintopatientstheimplicationsofthetestresults(post-testcounseling),andassistintestingfamilymembersatrisk.
