Ametallicnanostructuredarraythatscattersradiationtowardathinmetalliclayergeneratessurfaceplasmonresonancesfornormallyincidentlight.Thelocationoftheminimumofthespectralreflectivityservestodetectchangesintheindexofrefractionofthemediumunderanalysis.Thenormalincidenceoperationeasesitsintegrationwithopticalfibers.Thegeometryofthearrangementandthematerialselectionarechangedtooptimizesomeperformanceparametersassensitivity,figureofmerit,fieldenhancement,andspectralwidth.Thisoptimizationtakesintoaccountthefeasibilityofthefabrication.Theevaluatedresultsofsensitivity(1020nm/RIU)andfigureofmerit(614RIU-1)arecompetitivewiththosepreviouslyreported.
