简介:Withanultimaterangeupto1000km,amaximumoperatingdepthof6000m,andagenerouspayloadcapacity,Autosub6000iswellplacedtobecomeoneoftheworld’smostcapabledeepdivingAutonomousUnderwaterVehicles(AUVs).Recently,Autosub6000successfullycompleteditsfirstdeepwaterengineeringtrials,andinSeptember2008,fittedwithamultibeamsonar,willcarryoutitsfirstsciencemissions.ThispaperwilldescribehowwearetacklingthedesignissuesthatspecificallyaffectadeepdivingAUVwhichmustbecapableofoperatingwithtrueautonomy,independentlyofthemothership,namely:carryingadequateenergyforlongenduranceandrange,copingwithvaryingbuoyancy,andmaintainingaccuratenavigationthroughoutmissionslastinguptoseveraldays.Resultsfromtherecentengineeringtrailsarepresented,andfuturemissionsanddevelopmentplansarediscussed.
